Welcome to Rowan Class
We are Years 4 and 5 (age 8-10 years) and love learning. We have new topic areas each term, which make our learning engaging and exciting right across the curriculum. Whether we are investigating in maths, or in writing activities, we try our hardest and challenge ourselves, whilst having some fun at the same time. We talk about how to approach our learning too – being resilient through being organised, creative, persevering, and not being afraid to make mistakes. Reflecting on our mistakes is how we can learn so much. After the corona virus restrictions have been lifted, feel free to come and see what we do and how we learn.
Reading is one of the most important skills in life, and needs support at home, as well as at school. We encourage parents and carers to listen to your child read at least five times per week. Please write in the reading record book noting the date, the page they read to and any comment you wish to make. We monitor the reading records every week and know that spending time together on this can really make a difference. At the moment we will be asking the children to choose a book from the class bookshelf and keep it to read in school.
Homework is set every Wednesday. Please support your child with their home learning in any way you can. If you have any questions, feel free to discuss them with us. Weekly homework is handed in every Monday, which gives us 72 hours to quarantine the books, and then time to mark it and talk it through with the children. We will be alternating English and maths books to allow for this process to happen. We also like to challenge the children with their own holiday project. This is based on a topic, and is set in the last week of term.
The children are provided with weekly spellings. We are using a new scheme from The Spelling Shed based on the National Curriculum spelling lists and rules (as before). The rules and patterns for each week across the year will be posted on the website.
Whilst support and teaching on these focus words is given to the children in school, we definitely encourage support and practice of these spellings at home as well. We have a spelling test every Thursday.
You may already be aware that all Year 4 children nationally were to be tested on their times tables in June 2020. We are expecting this to begin in June 2021 instead. We practise times tables each day to ensure that the children are not only fully prepared, but also as an aid to their learning in maths. If they can recall these facts quickly, as well as the division facts, they are able to access calculations and manipulate fractions much more successfully. You are very welcome to practise at home too – singing, chanting or quizzes on car journeys can make this fun. We have a times tables test every Friday, where children work at their own level – improving their own scores week to week.
We have two hours of PE every week in Rowan Class. This is timetabled for a Tuesday afternoon. It is important that your child is organised with a complete PE kit in school. During the time of the corona virus, children are expected to come to school already in their PE kit that day.
If you have any time during school hours and would like to come in to help us with reading or other school activities – either as a one-off or on a regular basis - we would love to hear from you! Again, this will be temporarily on hold during the time of the corona virus.
