Welcome to Hazel class
We are Years 1 and 2 (age 5-7 years) and we love learning. In Hazel class, we aim to capture children’s natural curiosity by engaging them in exciting learning opportunities. We focus on teamwork and interactive learning, as children are encouraged to work together and share ideas to learn from one another. We also believe Key Stage 1 children should be supported on their journey to independence, aiming towards children taking ownership of their learning.
Reading is an important skill that needs to be supported at home. Your child will be given a Project X phonics book which is suited to their current stage. We encourage you to be listening to your child read at least five times per week. Please write in the reading record book noting the date, the page they read and any comment you wish to make. These books will be changed once a week.
You may already be aware that all Year 1 children nationally will be tested on their decoding skills in June. To support them with this, phonics will be taught daily. We also encourage you to practise tricky words and phonics sounds at home to support learning of these.
Children are provided with weekly spellings. These spellings are based on the National Curriculum spelling lists taken from our spelling scheme – Spelling Shed. All children will also be given a login to practise these at home
Whilst support and teaching on these focus words is given to the children in school, we encourage support and practice of these spellings at home as well. We have a spelling test every Thursday.
In order to support children with becoming fluent in Maths, number bond facts will be practised. Year 1 will work on addition facts within 10 and year 2 will work on addition facts within 20. Children will be provided with home learning packs to support recall of these and assessed termly to enable them to move on to the next step.
We will be having two hours of P.E. every week in Hazel Class. It is really important that your child has a complete P.E. kit in school.
If you have any spare time during school hours and would like to come in to our class to help us with reading or other school work, we would love to hear from you! Speak to the class teacher to find how you can help! This will be temporarily on hold during the time of the corona virus.
As always if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to ring school to make an appointment or speak to us at the end of the day.
